Free support in New Zealand
The New Zealand Gambling Helpline offers free support. Call 0800 654 655 or text 8006. You can ask for help for yourself or because you are concerned about someone else. Safer Gambling Aotearoa also provides information about recognising harm and finding support. You do not have to wait until a problem feels severe before having a conversation.
Notice the warning signs
Spending more time or money than planned, hiding gambling, borrowing to continue or trying to win back losses can be signs that gambling is becoming harmful. Feeling anxious when you cannot access a casino can also be a reason to pause. A bonus, loyalty reward or promised new start does not solve those concerns. Close the site, step away from the device and speak with someone you trust or an independent support service.
Use limits before a session begins
If you choose to gamble, decide beforehand what you can afford to lose after essential costs. Use available deposit, loss and time limits, and keep a separate record of spending across all accounts. A limit at one operator does not automatically cover another. Avoid gambling when upset, intoxicated or trying to solve a money problem. Treat a reached limit as the end of a session, not a target to increase.
Taking a break or self-excluding
Ask the operator about a cooling-off period or self-exclusion if you need distance. Confirm which accounts and brands the exclusion covers and what happens to an existing balance. Do not bypass a restriction with a new account, another person’s identity or a VPN. You can also ask your bank about gambling-payment blocks and consider device blocking tools. An independent counsellor can help you choose practical steps that fit your situation.
Adults only and support for others
This site is for adults aged 18 and over; an operator may impose additional eligibility rules. Keep account access and payment credentials away from children. If you are worried about someone else, choose a calm moment to talk about what you have noticed without promising to solve the issue through more money. The helpline can support family members and friends as well as people who gamble.
